Descrizione

Il genere fu descritto nel 1776 dal naturalista danese Otto Friedrich Müller, nella sua opera Zoologiæ Danicæ Prodromus, seu Animalium Daniæ et Norvegiæ indigenarum Characteres, nomina, et sinonimo imprimis Popularium. Havniae: Hallageri. (Vedi digitalizzato). 3 Etimologia Müller prese il nome Pecten dal latino classico pecten, -inis, "pettine", e anche il nome di una "specie di ostrica commestibile" (probabilmente una capesanta).

Diffusione

Il genere è conosciuto nella documentazione fossile dal periodo Cretaceo al periodo Quaternario (da 70,6 milioni di anni fa ad oggi). Conchiglie fossili di questo genere sono state trovate in tutto il mondo. Le specie viventi abitano i fondali sabbiosi fino a 100 m di profondità, non lontano dalla costa . Si muovono chiudendo rapidamente le valvole del guscio. Alcuni sono commestibili molto richiesti dai buongustai , in particolare la capesante stessa Pecten maximus. In natura agiscono come depuratori, filtrando l'acqua salata , funzione particolarmente importante in periodi di eccesso di alghe (ad esempio, maree rosse ) che possono mettere a rischio l'equilibrio dell'ecosistema. In Europa esistono due specie di capesante, Pecten jacobaeus, che vive sui fondali sabbiosi del Mediterraneo, e Pecten maximus, che vive sui fondali sabbiosi dell'Atlantico nordorientale .
